Toronto, ON (April 19, 2004) - Bioscrypt Inc. (TSX: BYT), a leading provider of identity verification technology, today announced that they have received strong results in a competition of leading fingerprint biometric vendors, research groups and independent developers.

Earning 8 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals out of 28 events in the Open competition and a further 5 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals out of 28 events in the Light competition, Bioscrypt achieved impressive results for the second time in the Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC).

Further, in placing first out of 41 participants in the Open category and fourth out of 26 participants in the Light category, Bioscrypt was the only participant to place in the top five in both the Open and Light categories based on the average equal error rate results over the 4 databases used for testing.

"Bioscrypt was the only North American participant to finish in the top ten in medals won, in both the Open and Light categories. Bioscrypt's results across the distinct image types and range of processing requirements included in the 2004 Fingerprint Verification Competition provide further evidence that Bioscrypt has 'best-of-breed' technology," said Pierre Donaldson, President and CEO, Bioscrypt. "We look forward to providing our industry leading identity verification offerings to our customers and partners for their diverse applications."

The FVC Competition is a study aimed to track advances in fingerprint verification. In order to achieve this goal, databases of fingerprints are collected to conduct "off-line" tests.

The open category has no limits on memory requirements or template size. A template is an electronic file of the digital representation of a scanned fingerprint. For practical testing reasons, the response time of the algorithms is limited such that the maximum time for each enrollment is 10 seconds and the maximum time for each matching is 5 seconds. Bioscrypt averaged 0.08 seconds for enrollment and 1.48 seconds for a match across four databases.

The light category is intended for algorithms conceived for light architectures and therefore characterized by low computing needs, limited memory usage and small template size. The maximum time for enrollment is 0.5 seconds and the maximum time for matching is 0.3 seconds.

Bioscrypt averaged 0.09 seconds for enrolment and 0.17 seconds for a match across four databases.
In view of the above results, it is clear that Bioscrypt's algorithm continues to perform exceedingly well in the FVC tests. Therefore, given that deployment of Bioscrypt's technology has advanced considerably over the last few years and that future demand appears very strong, Bioscrypt will review its further involvement in FVC and similar competitions as the time and resource requirement may not correspond with the corporate demands.

About FVC 2004
The Biometric Systems Lab (University of Bologna), the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Laboratory (Michigan State University) and the Biometric Test Center (San Jose State University) are pleased to announce FVC2004: the Third International Fingerprint Verification Competition Continuous advances in the field of biometric systems and, in particular, in fingerprint-based systems (both in matching techniques and sensing devices) require that the performance evaluation of biometric systems be carried out at regular intervals. The aim of FVC2004 is to track recent advances in fingerprint verification, for both academia and industry, and to benchmark the state-of-the-art in fingerprint technology.

This competition should not be viewed as an "official" performance certification of biometric systems, since:
* the databases used in this contest have not been necessarily acquired in a real-world application environment and are not collected according to a formal protocol.
* only parts of the system software will be evaluated by using images from sensors not native to each system.

Nonetheless, the results of this competition will give a useful overview of the state-of-the-art in this field and will provide guidance to the participants for improving their algorithms.
